PCB Assembly
Production process / Manufacturing step
PCB Assembly (Rigid) is the next stage after fabrication—it’s where the electronic components are mounted onto a rigid PCB to make it a working circuit.
Steps in Rigid PCB Assembly
1. Solder Paste Application
- Solder paste is applied on pads using a stencil.
2. Component Placement
- Done by automated machines (pick-and-place)
- Components are placed precisely on the board
3. Reflow Soldering
- Board is heated in an oven
- Solder melts and forms strong electrical connections
4. Inspection
- Methods:
- Visual inspection
- AOI (Automated Optical Inspection)
5. Through-Hole Assembly (if needed)
- Components inserted into drilled holes
- Soldered using wave soldering or manual soldering
6. Testing
- Functional testing (does the circuit work?)
- Electrical testing
Types of Assembly
- SMT (Surface Mount Technology) → components mounted directly on surface
- THT (Through-Hole Technology) → components inserted into holes
